String of Hearts (Ceropegia Woodii)

String of Hearts (Ceropegia Woodii)

Ceropegia can be evergreen or semi-evergreen, erect, climbing to trailing, usually succulent, perennials with opposite leaves and curiously shaped flowers in summer, sometimes followed by cylindrical fruits containing silky tufted seeds.

C. lineari subsp. woodii is an evergreen tuberous perennial with long trailing stems to 1m or more, bearing small, heart-shaped, grey-patterned leaves purple beneath, and lantern-shaped pink and purple tubular flowers 2cm long.

Use a container with good drainage holes and plant string of hearts in average potting soil amended with one-third sand. This vine must not be kept too wet or it is prone to rot. Allow the soil to dry out completely between watering. The plant goes dormant in winter, so watering should be even less frequent.
